THE COLLECTIVE
COLLECTIFMALUNÉS is a Franco-Belgian contemporary circus company, founded in Belgium in 2009.
The collective was born out of an insatiable desire to grow artistically, both in the ring and on the street, while undertaking higher education in circus arts at Tilburg (AcaPA). Four young artists, including two brothers—three Flemish and one French: Arne, Juliette, Simon and Vincent—came together to form this ambitious and energetic collective.
In 2010
the first tour of the street performance Sens Dessus Dessous began. During its first years, the show was performed in Flanders and the Netherlands.
In 2011
, it won the Jury’s Grand Prize and the Audience Award at the international street festival: Miramiro, Gent. In 2012, the show travelled further afield to Spain.
From 2013 to 2015
, with its acrobats freshly graduated, the show met growing demand! It was taken under the wing of renowned agency Frans Brood Productions. The number of performances tripled, and Sens Dessus Dessous extended its tour to England, Ireland, France, Lithuania, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, and even as far as Venezuela. 250 performances to date!
In autumn 2015 Sens Dessus Dessous made way for the Collectif Malunés’ second production, Forever, Happily… The collective expanded for the occasion and now comprised seven artists. This time, the performance took place under a burgundy-coloured circus tent, reminiscent of the beautiful, old-fashioned caravan of the early days. The artists took mischievous pleasure in mistreating and reinventing the characters of traditional fairy tales. Forever, Happily… toured throughout Europe and 2016 received the Belgian “Cultural Prize for Circus.”
In 2020
, the year of lockdowns, We agree to disagree, an interactive and participatory street performance seeking to bring people together around a form of intimate, local circus, tried to find its place amid social-distancing measures. It ultimately found its audience and continued until 2024
, making way for the latest creation under the circus tent, currently on tour: Tout Va Hyper Bien.
Alongside
his creation (We agree to disagree), the Bruyninckx brothers also decided to step onto the stage together and created the performance BITBYBIT,
in collaboration with the performance company movedbymatter. Over the course of three years, the show was performed no fewer than 200 times and was notably selected for the Ghent Theatre Festival in 2022. The show also came to an end in 2024, making way for the latest creation under the circus tent, currently on tour: Tout va hyper bien.
Meanwhile,
in spring 2026, Arne Sabbe, a longstanding member of the collective, gave birth to his baby—a performance combining his two passions, aikido and acrobatics:Ki No Nagare (also currently on tour).
Today, as our society becomes increasingly individualistic, we want to persevere in pursuing a collective vision. Even if it may seem utopian, the Collectif wants to continue experimenting, performing and working towards mutual support between companies, artists and audiences.
The idea behind creating collective art is to share an experience, an honest, physical and real taking of risks.
Circus, and especially nomadic circus through the presence of its tent, transforms the infrastructure of a city and creates a new dynamic in which people are more likely to come and see a performance right on their doorstep, thereby bringing together people from all social backgrounds.
